Arts by the Sea 2025 celebrates Bournemouth with “We Are Here”
March 12th
Arts by the Sea, the South West’s biggest free celebration of arts, culture, people and place, returns for its 15th edition from Friday 26 – Sunday 28 September 2025. This year’s theme, We Are Here, is a bold declaration of belonging and identity, celebrating the vibrant diversity and creativity of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP).
Arts by the Sea is launching an open call for its prestigious Artist in Residence Scheme, inviting creatives from the BCP area, whether they’re local, studying or have moved away, to apply and make their mark on the festival and the wider BCP area. This unique opportunity offers an artist the chance to design the front cover of the festival brochure, create a bespoke commissioned artwork to be showcased during the festival and lead four community workshops, bringing audiences closer to the creative process.
A key addition to this year’s scheme is a mentorship opportunity with 2024 Artist in Residence, Rebecca Strickson, whose bold, community-driven work inspired audiences across the BCP area. The 2025 selected artist will work closely with Strickson, gaining insights into how to translate their vision across the festival’s platforms — from interactive installations to branding elements.
For those keen to apply, submissions are open for the 2025 Artist in Residence Scheme. The deadline is 12pm on Monday 10th March and artists can apply here.
This year’s theme, We Are Here, embodies the spirit of community and creative expression. From spellbinding walkabout performances to immersive installations, music, storytelling and dance, over 100 artists will transform Bournemouth into a vibrant cultural playground.
Andrea Francis, Festival Director, said: “This year’s festival will fill Bournemouth with an incredible mix of performances, music and interactive art, bringing communities together to celebrate the power of place and identity. We Are Here is about creating unforgettable moments, amplifying voices that deserve to be heard and showcasing the extraordinary talent that makes Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole such a dynamic and inspiring place to live. Arts by the Sea isn’t just an arts festival – it’s a bold statement of belonging, where every voice is heard, every story matters and the power of community takes center stage.”
Councillor Andy Martin, BCP Council Cabinet Member for Customer, Communications, and Culture, added: “Arts by the Sea has been a vital platform for creativity and connection, putting Bournemouth on the map as a hub of cultural innovation. This year’s theme captures the creativity and community spirit of the people of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole as well as the core of Arts by the Sea’s ethos in nurturing artistic talent.”
Arts by the Sea has been a cornerstone of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole’s cultural landscape for 15 years, bringing communities together through creativity, performance and artistic expression. A BCP Council-led initiative supported by Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation funding, the festival is committed to delivering an inclusive, accessible and sustainable event that celebrates the creativity of the South West.
