Alan is the Head of Commercial Services for the Students Union at Bournemouth University, a charity that raises funds through its commercial activity to spend on student support, advice, and group activity. Alan is currently the chair of Bournemouth Townwatch and a board member of the Bournemouth Town Centre Business Improvement District.

He believes in strong mutual relationship between cultural development and economic development. The enrichment, education and expression that Art improves communities, builds aspiration and this boosts the economic performance of towns and cities. 

As part of his role in Bournemouth Alan has overseen the development of outdoor events and festivals, grass roots touring live music and has been an active campaigner for broadening the cultural night time offer in Bournemouth. Alan instigated two key research reports about Bournemouth – ‘Bournemouth by Night’ and ‘Bournemouth by Night 2’ exploring interventions, opportunities and ideas for development what the Town’s after dark offer should be.
